Eucalyptus is used for many outdoor woodworking projects, included outdoor furniture. It has a durability index rating of 1,910, where white pine comes in at 380 (Janka Index Rating). Properly maintained Eucalyptus wood can last up to 25 years outdoors, not so with pine. Best of all, these kits are unassembled and easy to put together. The bottom board and lid are already assembled. All you need to do is put the box together with nails, screws or staples.
The boxes we use for ourselves are modified. We drill a mason jar lid size hole in the top and bottom. The bottom is for ventilation covered with #8 hardware cloth, and the top for feeding with a mason jar. You can also drill a 3/4 inch hole in the lid to use a bucket feeder.
The boxes will need to be painted or treated with a wood preservative. We've been using Eco Wood for several years now. It saves hours of time. The wood will darken over time. Just dip them and let them dry for a couple of days. It is zero VOC and our bees don't seem to mind.
The closest price we could find on wooden Nuc boxes was from Dadant at $28.95, which is made of 5.8 inch plywood. These are good solid Nucs and will last a very long time. And they're cheaper. Our price starts at $28.00 each, and goes down depending on how many you buy. We can also assemble them for you for a small fee but assembly is easy so you may want to do it yourself.
